San Diego ranks among the nation’s top life science clusters, driving strong demand for modern lab and R&D space. To meet this demand, RMR leveraged its vertically integrated platform to transform three outdated Class B office and lab buildings into Muse at Torrey Pines – a premier Class A life science campus delivered in 2021 and designed for innovation and collaboration.
The project began with a clear vision: repurpose an existing property occupied by The Scripps Research Institute into a modern, flexible environment that attracts leading life science companies. Through a comprehensive core-and-shell redevelopment, we reimagined the site plan and engineered three interconnected buildings with:
- Expansive glass facades inspired by the DNA helix, replacing dated brick exteriors and ribbon windows.
- Flexible floor plates designed for lab adaptability and futureproofing.
- Activated outdoor spaces and a dedicated amenity building to foster collaboration and wellness.
Daylighting studies informed the placement of fins and mullions, optimizing solar shading and panoramic views of Mission Valley.
