Redefining CRE Growth: A Q&A with CEO Adam Portnoy

We sat down with our President and CEO, Adam Portnoy, to discuss the strategy behind the rebrand, RMR’s continued focus on operational excellence and how our vertically integrated model is driving long-term value across our entire ecosystem.
Q: RMR Group has a 40-year legacy in the industry. Why is now the right time to introduce a new brand identity?
Adam Portnoy: While asset management and maximizing value of the real estate we manage remains a core ethos of the organization, our platform has evolved significantly over the years. We proudly have created a vertically integrated platform of almost 1,000 people that brings together experienced teams, a national operating footprint, an operating platform that includes engineers through investments professionals and broad investment management capabilities across multiple asset classes.
Our external identity needs to reflect the comprehensive range of markets we proudly serve today. This introduction of a new brand identity and website is much more than a visual refresh. It actively reflects how RMR operates and signals exactly where we are headed.
Q: Growth in alternative asset management is often measured by volume. How is RMR redefining what growth looks like in the current economic environment?
Adam Portnoy: Historically, the industry measured growth by the number of assets under management or the size of a firm’s footprint. Today, real growth is about increasing efficiency through operational performance, transparency and resilience.
RMR’s reach extends across the capital stack and is supported by a highly service-led real estate model. As we increase our engagement with private capital, our brand needs to reflect a broader view of value creation. We operate first and foremost with an owner’s mindset, informed by the unique dataset we’ve built through more than 40 years of operating experience across office, industrial, retail, hospitality, senior living and residential assets. That scale and multi-sector insight allow us to take a data-driven approach that goes beyond the traditional asset manager roles and delivers stronger performance.
Q: A major component of this rebrand is the new website. How does this interface improve accessibility for stakeholders?
Adam Portnoy: We designed our brand to convey clarity, confidence and scalability. It needs to reflect the entrepreneurial ownership culture our teams have built over the past four decades. Central to that effort is our new website, which serves as the primary gateway into the RMR platform.
In addition to improving navigation and access to information, the site provides a more compelling platform to tell RMR’s story and demonstrate how our teams operate. Across sectors, our people are constantly identifying opportunities, managing assets and structuring deals in ways that unlock more value. That’s how we’ve always operated, but the new platform strengthens how we communicate our insights and results to investors, partners and other stakeholders.
Q: How does RMR’s vertically integrated model connect public REIT discipline with private capital agility?
Adam Portnoy: Managing public REITs requires a high level of transparency, accountability and operational discipline in a highly regulated environment. Over time, that experience has built a strong institutional foundation at RMR - one that many private capital platforms have not been required to develop.
At the same time, RMR maintains an entrepreneurial culture that keeps us nimble when markets shift. The combination of institutional discipline and entrepreneurial agility is what allows our vertically integrated model to work so effectively.
With our in-house investment strategy and asset management capabilities, RMR’s teams operate across the entire lifecycle of an investment and adapt as needed to market changes. That structure allows us to move seamlessly from high-level strategy to operational execution while maintaining the rigor our public REIT partners expect and the flexibility that private capital investors value.
Q: How does this platform evolution benefit the specific groups within RMR’s ecosystem?
Adam Portnoy: This evolution unlocks tremendous potential across the board:
